Choosing the Right Word Press Theme For Your Blog

Let’s discuss your blog and the theme you choose. It is important to have the right look and feel for your business.

The theme that comes with any word press blog installation is plain and not very nice looking. So you want to get your own theme to make your blog unique to you and your business.

There are hundreds to thousands of free themes you can get just by doing a simple search with your favorite search engine such as Google. But there are some things to consider when choosing your theme.

First, is the navigation on the right or left side of the theme? Decide this before you pick out your theme. Also some themes come with the navigation on the top some are above the header and some are below the header.

Second, is your theme ‘widget ready‘ this is important as it gives you control on what you can put on your sidebars, so make sure it is widget ready.

Third, make sure you preview the theme and read the designers terms, some themes you are not allowed to edit and replace things such as the header or remove the footer information.

Your theme should be clean and easy to navigate for your visitors. I highly recommend that you also choose at least 3 or 4 different types of themes and test them out.

I have discovered that the way a theme looks in preview is not always the way it works once installed on a blog, so make sure you have some options.

Following these steps can save you time when you are installing a word press blog.

To find some top themes you can start by searching WordPress.org┬áthere are tons of free themes you can choose from there. You can also go to Google and type in ‘free word press themes’ this will take some time so be patient and do choose wisely.

Remember, that you are not committed to this theme, bloggers are changing their themes all the time as their blog grows.

Once you have your theme, download it and save it some where safe like your desktop. Your theme will download as a .zip file so make sure you have a way to unzip this if you need to. You can get a 30-day trial of WinZip for unzipping all your files and folders.

When you have your blog installed, you simply go to your dashboard and then click on Appearance, then on ‘Add New Themes’ at the top of this page you have the option ‘upload’ clicking on this will allow you to upload your theme in the .zip extension without having to unzip the theme first.

Once it is uploaded, you will have the option to preview it and to activate it, simply click on activate and your theme will be installed.

At the top of your page is the blog title, click on this and you will be able to see your newly uploaded theme.
